Resolve To Stop Habits That Can Damage Your Teeth In 2015

2014 is almost over and 2015 is almost here. And with the start of the New Year right around the corner, you may be thinking about what New Year's resolutions you want to make this year. Many people look to change habits that are not healthy, such as smoking and overeating. But did you know that some of the habits you have can be damaging to your teeth. Here are a few common habits that you may have that can be detrimental to your teeth, and the reasons you may wish to stop them in 2015.

Chewing Ice

You may love to sit and chew on a piece of ice. And you may think that it is much healthier to chew on ice than to eat something unhealthy, such as candy. However, while it may be better for your waistline, chewing ice can be detrimental to your teeth.

Ice is a hard substance. As you bite down on it to chew it, you can chip your teeth or crack them. This can happen suddenly or small fractures can occur over time, meaning you may not even be aware. In addition to cracking or chipping teeth, biting into ice can also cause the tooth enamel on your teeth to wear. This can alter the color of your teeth. And unfortunately, once enamel has worn away, it does not grow back.

Because of the damage that chewing ice can have on your teeth, 2015 may be the year you want to resolve to stop doing this in order to prevent damage to your teeth.

Brushing Your Teeth Too Hard

If you have stubborn stains, food stuck between your teeth or you simply wake up with teeth that feel icky to you, you may brush your teeth vigorously. And while you may think that brushing harder will help to remove more build-up, brushing your teeth too hard can have a negative effect on them.

Brushing your teeth too hard can damage the enamel on your teeth. It can either scratch it or wear it down over time. Should your enamel wear away, your teeth may appear grayish in color. It can also make your teeth more sensitive to hot and color beverages. Another problem caused by vigorous brushing is gum problems. When you brush roughly, you can irritate the gums, or cut them, making them susceptible to infection.

If you think brushing your teeth harder makes them cleaner, you may want to re-think this strategy in 2015. Instead of brushing your teeth harder, simply brush them for a few seconds longer. This can help to make your teeth and gums as healthy as possible in 2015.

Biting Your Nails

Biting your nails is a bad habit. You could be sticking germ-riddled fingers in your mouth, which can cause you to get sick more often. Or you could risk infection if you bite too far and draw blood. Also, biting your fingers looks unattractive. However, in addition to all of this, biting your fingernails can damage your teeth.

If you bite your nails, you can cause your teeth to become misaligned. That is because when you bite your nails, you are not biting evenly, as your nail only affects a couple teeth. Unfortunately, you likely bite your nails repetitively and as you do so, you probably use the same few teeth without realizing it. This can cause those teeth to shift or move as they are used over and over. Additionally, your nails can be hard, which means that you can chip or crack a tooth as you bite on your fingers.

If you are a nail-chewer, there are many benefits to stopping. Make 2015 the year that you resolve to stop chewing your nails.

If you are looking to make a resolution this New Year's consider making a resolution that affects the health of your teeth. If you chew ice, brush your teeth too hard or bite your nails, you could be damaging your teeth without even realizing it. Stopping these habits can help keep your teeth healthy in 2015.
